Abstract

Introduction. Symptoms of depression are becoming more common and are often treated in primary care. Ample research has been conducted to study subtypes of depression in order to tailor treatment specifically for the patient. So far, little research has been done on specifying depressive symptoms on symptom level based on the DSM criteria. This study, as part of the BLENDING study, therefore focuses on finding possible differences in severity between the depressive symptoms. Methods. This study included 21 primary care participants with depressive symptoms. A diagnostic interview took place to determine which depressive symptoms were present. By means of ecological momentary assessment (EMA) via a smartphone application, the participants scored their mood several times a week. These EMA scores were used to calculate indicators (variance, autocorrelation, cross-correlation and negative affect), which are based on previous EMA research and are able to predict the occurrence or deterioration of depressive symptoms. Results. Three out of the nine possible symptoms of depression scored significantly higher on three EMA indicators, namely psychomotor agitation or inhibition, diminished ability to think or concentrate, or indecisiveness and recurrent thoughts of death or suicidal ideation. Conclusion. The findings from this study suggest that the three symptoms mentioned above are more important than the other symptoms when dealing with depressive symptoms. This could have important consequences for the choice of treatment. More research with use of the EMA is needed to further specify the effects found in this study and to determine the possible consequences.
