Relevance: Overweight and obesity are enormous health problems in people with intellectual disability (ID) and lead to low physical fitness, high morbidity and mortality. Hardly any research has done to find effective interventions to improve health in overweighed people with ID. Objective: A 12-week lifestyle intervention was executed to establish health gain in people with intellectual disability and overweight. Methods: A controlled before after study was conducted in 26 adults with mild to moderate intellectual disability and overweight (body mass index, BMI>25 kg/m2 ). The intervention contained four components, nutrition, physical activity (PA), education and social support, with its aim at obtaining a healthy lifestyle. The intervention group (n=1 0) received PA three times a week and education in healthy living once a week. Health related physical fitness, knowledge, quality of life and amount of PA were measured. Results: The intervention group showed more improvement over time compared to the control group on weight (p=.02), BMI (p=.01 ), fat percentage (p=.04), cardiovascular (CV) endurance (p<.01) and muscular endurance (p=.02). Conclusion: This lifestyle intervention has shown to be an effective method to increase the health of overweighed adults with mild to moderate intellectual disabilities.
