Abstract
In Groningen, homeless people with dental problems are treated in a special project from the UMCG, Center for Dentistry and Oral Hygiene. These patients often deal with addiction problems, and entered through the waiting list ofVNN, the addiction center for Northern Netherlands. The objective of this qualitative survey is to ascertain whether dental treatment will help homeless people to improve their overall functioning in society and whether treatment will lead to social rehabilitation. Semi-structured interview were conducted in fifteen patients, at least half a year after treatment had subsided. Patients were asked about their reasons for seeking dental care, about other attempts to improve social rehabilitation, and about their level of satisfaction with the treatment. The main reason to seek dental treatment was relief of dental pain, followed by a desire to improve aesthetics. In most cases prosthesis (full or partial) were made, including a number of frame prosthesis and plate prosthesis. Overall, patients were very satisfied with the end result and with the way they were treated. Although quantitative studies are needed for validation, the following assumptions can be made, based on the survey. The performed dentistry relieves dental pain and improves chewing ability and aesthetics, although these results do not seem to improve overall functioning in society. Dental treatment seems to be a separate step in the social rehabilitation ofhomeless patients. Treatment did however make patients become socially more secure. Also, after treatment, patients experience less feelings of shame.
