Abstract

With aging, the position of the eyebrows may lower beneath the ideal position, which has consequences in non-verbal communication and expression of emotion. Besides this, the patient can experience physical challenges such as headaches and partial loss of sight due to brow ptosis. In the past century, various techniques have been developed to lift the position of the brow, direct as well as a complete forehead lift. Out of this last group the difference between the open and endoscopic forehead lift has never been investigated over a longer period. In this research on 82 patients, with a follow-up of 3-10 years, the difference between the endoscopic (n=56) and open (n=26) procedure has been compared. The hypothesis was to find the open forehead lift to be better and have a longer lasting effect in comparison to the endoscopic procedure. Objective measurements of pictures have been used, as well as subjective opinions of the patients via a questionnaire. The only difference found in the questionnaire, was a reduced sensation of the scalp and forehead in the open lift group. Objectively, both procedures showed a significant lift postoperative as well as after this long follow-up. Both lifts still have a place in current medicine. In conclusion, both operations maintain lift over time and no significant difference was found between the endoscopic and open forehead lift.
