Abstract

Depression and anxiety are common psychiatric disorders with a high burden of disease and an often chronic character. Current treatments such as psychoeducation, psychotherapy, and psychotropic drugs do not seem to be sufficiently effective. Working on lifestyle changes in order to improve one’s adaptability and self-reliance in chronic diseases is currently being promoted by the Ministry of Health. However, within the field of mental health services, the possibility of using lifestyle changes for disease management is often overlooked. The Centre for Integrative Psychiatry (Lentis, Groningen) has offered a variety of lifestyle modification programs for the last ten years. However, to date there has been neither a combined lifestyle modification program available, nor in depth research done on this topic. With this in mind, a Therapeutic Lifestyle Program (TLP) was developed for patients with anxiety disorders and/or depression. The TLP lasted for 12 weeks and included a group of eight participants who came together every week to do physical activities, relaxation exercises, and eat together. Firstly, this pilot project aims to examine whether the TLP reduced participants' complaints and enhanced their wellbeing and happiness. Secondly, it analyzes whether participants succeeded in changing their lifestyles in order to more closely match the three given lifestyle recommendations. Participants answered questionnaires on mental health complaints, wellbeing, diet, physical activity and relaxation four times over the course of the TLP. The results show a significant decrease in anxiety, mood disturbances, and stress complaints during the 12 weeks. At the same time, overall wellbeing and happiness appeared to increase significantly. Additionally, participants were able to change their behavior within the 12 weeks to better match the given advice. These initial findings are grounds to further investigate the TLP as a potential treatment option within mental health services.
