Abstract

This study investigated whether attentional problems contribute to the development of dyslexia. Research was conducted by using response times and accuracy in the ‘Simon task’ and ‘Stroop task’ in relation to the electroencephalographic (EEG) theta (4-8 Hz) band activity, which can be seen as an electrophysiological index of working memory. These attentional tasks were performed by 38 dyslectic children (FRD-group), 34 at-risk children without dyslexia (FRND-group) and by a control group (C-group) of 41 children. Furthermore, this study investigated the differences in brain activity between the FRD-group, the FRND-group and the C-group using EEG theta and beta (12-30 Hz) band activity. In addition, this study investigated whether normalization or compensation in the brain occurs among the FRND-group in comparison with the FRD-group and the C-group. 16 dyslectic children, 14 at-risk children and a control group of 17 children performed three language processing tasks (orthographic, phonological and semantic), in which similar pairs of words were visually presented, while brain activity was measured using EEG during various phases of word processing. Compared to the C-group and the FRND-group, the FRD-group showed a longer response time and a reduced accuracy during the Stroop task. These results point towards an attentional problem. These results were not found for the Simon task and no correlation was found between attentional parameters and theta band activity. Furthermore, reduced beta band activity was measured in the FRD-group and FRND-group in comparison to the C-group. Beta band activity represents the possibility of grapheme-phoneme processing in the brain, which is affected in dyslectic children. Notable is the similar activity pattern of beta band activity in the FRD-group and FRND-group. For the theta band activity, no differences were found between all groups. These findings suggest a (non-detectable) compensation in at-risk children.
