Abstract

Objective: This study aims to assess the use of a validated questionnaire for care evaluation in the pediatric surgical outpatient setting of the University Medical Center of Groningen. Methods: The Measure of Process of Care (MPOC) was distributed from April 2018 to July 2018 to all policlinic patients. The implementation of the MPOC, current healthcare experiences and differences in responses between novel patients and follow-up patients was investigated. Data was analyzed using chi-square and Fisher Exact test where p<0.05 was considered significant. Questionnaires with < 50% of the answered items were not considered eligible for analysis. Results: A total of 164 questionnaires were distributed in which a response rate of 48.2% was achieved (n= 79). A total of 3 questionnaires were excluded from analysis due to missing data. Most respondents questioned the relevance of health items. The highest means were ‘Co-ordinated and comprehensive care’ and (=4.88) ‘Respectful and supportive care’ (=5.03). ‘Providing general information’ scored the lowest mean (=3.60). No difference in the response between novel patients and follow-up patients was detected. Conclusion: Implementation of the MPOC as a routine questionnaire in the pediatric surgical setting proved successful. It is able to detect weaker domains of health care and identify specific points of improvement. A difference in response between novel patients and follow-up patients was not found. Because this is a pilot study which focuses on one center, adjustments of questions and improved instructions are needed, future research should therefore be advocated.
