Abstract

Introduction - Serious games become a popular tool to diminish the effects of impaired postural control of elderly people. Unfortunately the existing games appear not to be suitable for elderly. Therefore the user requirements for a new exergame were investigated using a user-centered design. Methods - Two studies were conducted to investigate the user requirements. The first study investigated the context and the game recommendations of 9 elderly. Two semi-structured interviews were individually administered. In the second study 4 participants played existing games on the Xbox Kinect for 15 minutes once a week during seven weeks. The experience and the recommendations were investigated using two questionnaires. Prior and post to the study two semi-structured interviews were performed to examine the game recommendations. Results - The main outcomes of the first study was difference in participation in different activities between the elderly. The recommendations for a new game were a walking game, fitness dance game, ball game and puzzle game. The outcomes of the second study were a walking game and sport game. Participants of both studies preferred leg and arm movements to play the game. The elderly were prepared to invest time and money in exergames if it was proved to be enjoyable and effective. Conclusion - The participants of both studies recommended a multi player walking game. This game should be enjoyable to. To control the game wristbands were a good solution.
