Abstract

Abstract In the cohesion literature to date, few studies have described the dynamic nature of cohesion in soccer. Therefore, the aim of the current research was to investigate the influence of a single soccer-match on cohesion of a talented youth soccer team. It was hypothesized that there was an effect of aspect (individual attractions to the group and group integration) on the sum-scores of the GEQ. Further, it was hypothesized that there was an effect of type (the task oriented goal and the social oriented goal) on the sum-scores of cohesion. We expected a strong task related change in cohesion and a decreased performance when the social oriented goal is high before the soccer match. Nine players (mean age 18.22 ± 0.67) of a Dutch youth team of the professional soccer academy of sc Heerenveen, filling out the Group Environment Questionnaire ( GEQ), before and after a match. Results showed a significant difference between the pre- and post-match measurement in the social oriented group integration dimension of cohesion [z = -2.37, p < 0.05]. There was an interaction effect test (pre-match vs post-match) x goal (task oriented goal vs social oriented goal of cohesion) on the sum-score of the GEQ [F(1,8) = 10.18, p < 0.05]. The current study showed that social cohesion decreased after the soccer match. No changes in the task dimension of team cohesion could be determined. The degree to which players of the team liked each other and enjoy one another's company decreased after the soccer-match.
