Abstract

Introduction In case of a poor dental situation in which a regular treatment would result in too much damage (trauma/ anxiety) it can be decided to carry out the dental treatment of the child under general anesthesia. It is likely that children with severe dental problems are more often referred for treatment under anesthesia. Also the possible uncooperative attitudes and behavior of children can play a role in referring children for treatment under general anesthesia. The aim of this study is to determine the consistancy the extent to dental problems as well as behavioral consistency have with referral for treatment under general anesthesia. Methods All children who visited the clinic for pediatric dentistry at the CTM UMCG for dental treatment during the period 01-01-2014 t/m 31-12-2015 have been examined. 176 children were enrolled. The general patient data and diagnostic information of these children were listed. Using a Mann-Whitney U test and chi-square test a possible correlation between dental or behavioral problems and treatment under general anesthesia was determined. Results The group of 176 enrolled subjects consisted of 82 girls and 94 boys with an average age of 7 years and 6 months. On average the children had 4.91 (SD 2.27) teeth which were in need of treatment. In 13.1% of the children there was found any form of behavior problems. After a intake at the clinic for pediatrich dentistry at the CTM-UMCG 48.9% (n = 86) of the children were referred for treatment under general anesthesia. Children with more severe dental problems were referred significantly more often for the treatment under general anesthesia (Z = -5.674; P <0.001). In addition, there was found no difference in referral of childrin with or without behaverioul problems (X² (1) = 3.596, p> 0.05) Conclusion Children who have been referred to the clinic for pediatric dentistry at the CTM-UMCG show a significant correlation between the number of teeth to be treated and a dental treatment under general anesthesia. Referral of children with behavioral problems for dental treatment under general anesthesia schowed no such significant correlation. This is contrary to the expectations. This study investigated a limited group of patients within the CTM-UMCG. Further studies on a larger scale could show a possible general relevance .
