Abstract

Background: Dentists experience more neck, shoulder and back pain than do practitioners in other occupational groups. This fact can lead to serious physical disability and is a major problem in dentistry. During patient treatment, a good working posture is very important and may prevent musculoskeletal problems. Little evidence showed an increase in good working postures when magnification lenses were used. The purpose of this intervention study was to investigate if using magnification loupes improved dental students 'posture during treatment. Methods: Eight dental students had to perform a treatment at the skillslab. Photographs were taken while using en while not using magnification lenses. These photographs were evaluated by two educators in the field of ergonomy. Students were randomized into two groups. Group one used loupes in the first session and did not use them for the second session. Group two reversed this sequence. The best posture was determined. Both inter- en intra rater reliability was determined. Results: Results of this study indicate that a postural benefit is realized by the use of magnification loupes during dental treatment.
