Abstract

Introduction In the UMCG (and every other hospital) speed and hygiene during surgery are very important. Currently a keyboard and mouse are used to access DICOM images during surgery. An assistant has to perform these interactions. The process of asking the assistant to perform these interactions takes too long. Method In this report, the testing of a Kinect sensor for use in an operation room (OR) of a hospital has been described. The Kinect is a 3D camera and will be used for navigation through and interaction with DICOM images. A touchless interface can improve hygiene in the OR. Currently no touchless interface of this kind is available and the Kinect provides a possibly ideal platform to develop this. Results The Kinect has been tested for its accuracy and two different SDK’s have been compared. Gestures for specific tasks where designed, compared and tested. An interface was designed and built, a surgeon provided feedback to ensure that the methods used in this interface are usable in the operation room. The interface received positive feedback from a surgeon. Conclusion Further development is required for use of live DICOM images.
