Abstract
This study explored empathy and emotional contagion in professional football. Empathy and susceptibility to emotional contagion of young professional football players were measured using self-report questionnaires and compared with their non-professional peers. Further, empathy and susceptibility to emotional contagion were linked to on-ball contacts in a football match. Analysis showed that the young professional football players scored within the range of average on the self-report measures of empathy and susceptibility to emotional contagion and no differences were found between the scores of the football players and the control group. No association was found between the scores on the self-report measures of empathy and susceptibility to emotional contagion and on-ball contacts during a football match. Evidence suggests that playing positions plays a mediating role in the relationship between empathy and on-ball contacts during a match. This study provided evidence and knowledge that made the suggestion for the focus on a self-report measurement specific for team sport. In addition, attention to the expressiveness of football players could also be important for future research.
