Abstract
To improve the performance of an individual athlete, the influence of teammates and opponents should also be considered outside the evaluation of the performance of the athlete himself. In an individual sport as tennis, athletes are dependent on their own performance combined with the performance of their respective opponent. The aim of this study was to get a better picture of the interpersonal coordination of tennis players. In addition, the study of Palut and Zanone (2005) was taken into reconsideration by exposing their analysis method. By considering two athletes as a coupled oscillator, the relative phase can be taken as a measurement for the synchronization of two tennis players. The lateral positions of four experienced tennis players were analysed with a customized half-cycle Hilbert transformation while playing in either a cooperative or competitive setting. The results showed no clear differences in the coordination of tennis players between the two settings. In both conditions in-phase synchronization {0°) was preferred by the tennis players. Opposite results were found with the use ofPalut and Zanone's analysis method, which raises questions about their results and conclusions.
