Abstract

The purpose of this study was to gain insight into differences between Australian and Dutch gymnasts with respect to coping and anxiety. To be more specific, the primary aim of the study was to examine the influence of age, level of competition and country on anxiety and the use of coping strategy among gymnasts. The secondary aim of the study was to determine if the use of coping strategies, such as problem-focused coping, emotion-focused coping and avoidance coping, can be predicted by trait or state anxiety. Ninety female gymnasts from Australia and the Netherlands participated in this study. They completed a four-part questionnaire about anxiety and coping. This included some general questions, the Sport Competition Anxiety Test (SCAT), Competitive State Anxiety Inventory-2 (CSAI-2) and the Brief COPE. A multivariate ANOV A and several forced-entry linear regression analyses were performed to analyze the data. Multivariate ANOVA results revealed a significant main effect of country on problem- and emotion-focused coping and a significant main effect of age category on trait-, cognitive- and somatic anxiety. The linear regression analyses revealed that avoidance coping could be predicted by somatic trait and state anxiety. The results of this study suggest that nationality and age influenced trait and state anxiety and the use of coping strategies in gymnastics. Both nationalities reported the use of problem- and emotion-focused strategies more than avoidance coping strategies.
