Abstract
Background: There are high drop-out rates under residents and the cause is unclear. Previous research shows that residents in the first year of their training spend more time learning organisational tasks than patient related tasks. Aim: To describe what and how residents learn in the first year of their training. Also to describe the learning experiences of the first year of training, based on theory about work related learning. Methods: Eleven semi-structured interviews with residents in the second year of training were analyzed. In the interviews the residents were asked to reflect on the first year of training and to give examples of tasks that they struggled with in the beginning of training that they can fulfil successfully now. Results: The tasks residents mention can be divided in patient related skills, organisational skills and social skills. All this skills are being learned through informal learning, but patient related skills are also being learned formally. Residents also mentioned the influence of formal education, supervision and culture on their learning experiences. Conclusion: Residents say that the formal training is aimed in particular on the patient related skills they have to learn. Residents mention that a good supervisor, that gives them responsibility suited to their level, and a well structured training can influence a positive learning experience.
