Abstract
On 1 September 2011 a Mother and Baby Unit (MBU) was established at the ‘Psychiatrische Afdeling Algemeen Ziekenhuis’ (PAAZ) of the ‘Ziekenhuisgroep Twente’ (ZGT) in Almelo. Its main aim is to offer help to new mothers with a postpartum psychiatric disorder by admitting them together with their baby. In contrast to other countries, no research has been done yet into the performance of the MBU’s in The Netherlands and this study aims to provide a starting point. It focuses on the prevalence of the Axis I and possible co-morbid Axis II disorders with which mothers are admitted, the duration of the hospitalisation and the functioning of the mothers before and after the hospitalisation as shown by the GAF score. The study shows that a majority of the patients has been admitted with a postpartum depression. The mean duration of hospitalisation does not differ significantly between the various possible postpartum disorders and lies between the relatively short mean duration of hospitalisation as reported in Anglo-Saxon countries and the longer duration reported in for example Belgium or France. Patients seem to function significantly better after hospitalisation. Because the number of beds on the MBU in Almelo is restricted, there is a waiting list more often than not. This study has also looked at the way the waiting list operates. It turns out that the number of patients that has been put on the waiting list because of lack of space is increasing, as is the amount of time these patients spend on the waiting list.
