Abstract

The aim of the study was twofold: to validate the use of the constant bearing angle strategy (CBA-strategy) to model the behavior of intercepting (the center of) a moving traffic gap, and to implement in the model an avoidance term to take into account the boundary-related influences of the lead and trail vehicle forming the gap on the drivers' speed regulations. Informational input to the model was the bearing angle velocity of the center of the gap, and the lead and trail vehicles; the action variable was the drivers' acceleration. Using empirical data on intersection crossing while avoiding collision, the root-mean-square-error was calculated for both the velocity profile and current deviation (future passing position) simulations and the goodness of fit was determined using r2 • The model gave rise to very good simulations with r2 > 0.85 when using both the CBA-term and the avoidance term, although the first term only provided a very small contribution. The model with only an avoidance term was therefore equally capable of describing the effects of the imposed task and environmental constraints on intersection crossing (r2> 0.85).
