Abstract

This study examined the immediate- and long-term outcomes of intensive inpatient treatment in adolescents with anxiety disorders and/or obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), as well as treatment satisfaction. A longitudinal follow-up study was conducted using both existing clinical records and newly collected follow-up data from adolescents who participated in the San Remo treatment program at Levvel. Of the 67 adolescents who participated in the treatment program between 2022 and 2024, 27 were included in the study. For anxiety symptoms, a reduction in symptom severity was observed during and after treatment; however, due to the limited number of available measurements, no conclusions could be drawn at the group level. For OCD symptoms, results showed a significant reduction in symptom severity during treatment, with a large effect size. The majority of participants achieved clinically meaningful improvement, and a substantial proportion reached remission at the end of treatment. At follow-up (2–4 years post-treatment), no statistically significant difference in OCD symptom severity was found compared to end-of-treatment levels, suggesting maintenance of treatment gains, although this finding was based on limited data. During follow-up, participants reported higher levels of anxiety and depressive symptoms and lower quality of life and subjective well-being compared to normative populations which is consistent with the vulnerability of this clinically treated population. Overall treatment satisfaction was high. These findings suggest that intensive inpatient treatment can be effective in the short term for adolescents with OCD who do not sufficiently benefit from outpatient care, with indications for maintenance of treatment effects over time. The results highlight the importance of further research and the need for adequate aftercare following inpatient treatment.
