Background: Children’s perspectives on acute abdominal pain consultations in general practice remain underexplored, while their experiences and expectations can influence experienced reassurance, trust in the general practitioner (GP), and acceptance of management. Objective: To explore the motives, expectations, and experiences of children and their parents during a consultation in general practice for acute abdominal pain. Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 14 children (aged 4–18 years) with acute abdominal pain (≤7 days) and 11 parents after consultation in Dutch general practice. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. Results: Four themes were developed: from waiting to seeking care, feeling taken seriously, reassurance, and trust in the GP. Parents and children seek care when symptoms affect functioning or when concerns increase. Feeling taken seriously appears to function as a connecting mechanism between reassurance and trust. This feeling arises when GPs acknowledge concerns, centre the child in the interaction, and provide clear explanations of findings and management. Reassurance primarily derives from excluding serious conditions and from a careful, attentive consultation style. Trust in the GP is often already present and supports acceptance of the management plan. Conclusions: Feeling taken seriously appears to function as a connecting mechanism between reassurance and trust. GPs can enhance this experience by increasing predictability, explicitly acknowledging concerns, clearly explaining findings and reasoning, and providing clear follow-up instructions. These communicative elements provide opportunities for practice improvement and medical education.
