Background: The Network Intake is a new method to conduct an intake assessment within the Dutch mental healthcare system, which follows the patient’s narrative. During this assessment, a visual network is created that highlights different domains of life, each of which may contribute to the onset, course and recovery of psychosis. In 2022, the Network Intake was introduced in the Outpatient Clinic for Psychosis at the University Center of Psychiatry in Groningen. Published literature on the Network Intake is lacking and information about subjective experiences remains limited. Objective: The aim of this study is to explore what themes are addressed during the intake and to gain insight into the experiences of patients and clinicians with this method. Method: This study consists of two components. The first part involves an analysis of the content of the Network Intake. The second part is a phenomenological exploration of semi-structured interviews with 12 patients and 12 clinicians. Results: The Network Intake provides a comprehensive overview of medical, social, societal and patient-specific themes. Patients and clinicians perceive the method as personal and less concerned with symptoms compared to previous assessments. The interviews revealed challenges regarding the practical application and integration in the treatment process. Conclusion: The Network Intake has a broad and flexible applicability. It is considered particularly suitable for meeting patients experiencing a first episode of psychosis. The method has the potential to elucidate and facilitate the personal aspects of the recovery process. Future research can focus on the challenges that have been identified.
