Abstract

Background: Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic, auto-inflammatory disease that has a significant impact on patients’ physical, mental and social well-being. Patients experience stress, fatigue and limitations in daily functioning, despite adequate medical therapy. The concept of Positive Health (PH) provides a valuable framework for improving the patient journey by emphasising a holistic view. Methods: This qualitative study aimed to explore how the patient journey of individuals with left-sided UC at Medisch Spectrum Twente (MST) can be improved using the principles of PH. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven patients and four health care workers. Thematic analysis was used to identify key themes. The study adhered to the COREQ checklist. Results: After analysis of interviews, four key themes emerged: (1) experiences during flare-ups, diagnosis and treatment (2) the physical, emotional, and social impact of UC; (3) current application of Positive Health in practice; and (4) suggestions for improvement, mainly based on the wish for a more holistic and personalized approach to aftercare. Conclusion: While the current patient journey for UC patients at MST is satisfactory, a shift towards a more holistic and personalized approach is needed. Integrating PH in patient care can help address the broader impact UC has on daily life and promote more sustainable disease management. A structured aftercare plan and broader application of lifestyle and psychosocial support are essential steps forward.
