Abstract

Background: Although several studies have reported the positive effects of mindfulness interventions on quality of life and psychological well-being for patient populations it is not known whether these effects are the same for health workers and if these effects are attributable to a change in autonomy. Purpose: The aim of this study is to investigate the potentially positive effects of mindfulness on quality of life, psychological experienced problems, the level of mindfulness and autonomy for health workers. The second aim is to investigate the potentially mediating effects of changes in autonomy for the relationship between changes in mindfulness and changes in quality of life and changes in experienced psychological problems. Method: This study is performed in 56 health workers who participated in a mindfulness training. Before and after intervention questionairres were completed on quality of life, experienced psychological problems, mindfulness and autonomy. Through correlation analysis relationships were examined between all four measured variables. Regression analysis was used to examine a possible mediator. Results: Paired t-tests showed significant improvements in mindfulness (observe and awareness). Relationships were found between changes in mindfulness (describe and observe without judgement) and changes in experienced psychological problems. Mediating effects of autonomy were found in the relationship between mindfulness and experienced psychological problems. Conclusion: Mindfulness training for health workers shows a significant improvement in 2 characteristics of mindfulness (observe and awareness). Increased autonomy, at least partially mediates the relationship between changes in mindfulness (describe and observe without judgement) and changes in experienced psychological problems.
