Abstract

Heavy menstrual bleeding is a common medical condition which can be treated by NovaSure endometrial ablation. Limited data exists about performing this treatment at a young age. The aim of this study is to research whether young women treated with the NovaSure need follow-up treatment more often and whether there are risk factors for getting follow-up treatment. Methods: In this single-centre retrospective chart review 296 premenopausal patients were included. These were all patients aged 40 years or younger (n=148) with one control patient older than 40 years, who were treated between 2012-2022. The Chi-Square test was used to evaluate whether follow-up treatment differed in the age groups. Binary logistic regression analyses were done to identify potential risk factors. Results: Among women aged ≤40 years 31,8% had follow-up treatment versus 27,7% of women aged >40 years (p=0,446). Among women aged ≤35 years this was 50,0% versus 26,6% of women aged >35 years (p=0,001). In two risk factor analyses the presence of dysmenorrhoea (OR 2,661; CI 1,041-6,800, p=0,041) (OR 2,035; CI 1,166-3,552; p=0,012) and increasing length of the uterine cavity (OR 1,394; CI 1,126-1,727, p=0,002) (OR 1,289; CI 1,092-1,521; p=0,003) were significant risk factors. Sterilization concurrent with the NovaSure (OR 11,271; CI 2,069-61,444; p=0,005) was significant in one model. Conclusions: Women who are treated with the NovaSure aged 35 years or younger more often need follow-up treatment. Risk factors for follow-up treatment are dysmenorrhoea, increasing uterine cavity length and possibly concurrent sterilization with the NovaSure.
