Abstract

Background: Societal changes have prompted a paradigm shift in health care, from a largely biomedical focus towards more patient-centered care. Although patient centered care is associated with higher patient satisfaction and better health outcomes for patients, it is still not widely utilized by medical specialists. This suggests that health care professionals’ perceptions of and attitudes towards this concept hamper its widespread implementation, but little is known about these. This study aims to improve understanding of medical specialists’ attitudes and beliefs towards patient centeredness, to underpin the development of a training program for health care professionals to promote patient centeredness. Methods: We interviewed 16 medical specialists from various specialties at a large Dutch teaching hospital in 2023, exploring their attitudes towards patient centeredness. Data analysis occurred concurrently with data collection, in an iterative process. To develop codes and themes, continuous comparative thick analysis was used. Results: Participants related a positive attitude towards patient centeredness, and were aware of its positive effects on patient outcomes, and on their work engagement. They considered it the core of their profession, but differed in their elaboration and application of it in making decisions. Participants saw learning as a continuous process throughout their careers, but also expressed reluctance towards participating in educational courses. Conclusions: Participants are connected to the concept of patient centered care, and are aware of the positive effects its implication has on their consultations. However, participants require teaching to fully grasp the concept of patient centered care. It will be a challenge to motivate them, as participants expressed a reluctance towards participating in a course on patient centeredness.
