Introduction Interprofessional education (IPE) is necessary in the current healthcare domain in which needs considering demography, technology and population continuously change. IPE is promoted by several international healthcare organizations as part of an innovation with healthcare that could contribute to improved health outcomes and quality of care. Notwithstanding these positive aspects, IPE is not often applied. A main reason for this, is the absence of research to the effect of IPE in patient care. Aim The aim of this study is to find out what the experiences are of patients after the implementation of a IPE unit and what the impact is of IPE on patient care and the interprofessional learning trajectory. Method This study is part of an educational design study (EDR) in which the improvement of educational problems is combined with the improvement of the implementation process of IPE and through this, the enrichment of educational theory. In this study, the experiences of patients (n=16) within an IPE unit was investigated via semi-structured interviews. Afterwards these experiences were analyzed with a thematic analysis of the data. Results Between November 20 and December 22 2023 the interviews have been administered with patients at the IPE unit. After a thematic analysis the following 4 themes emerged: Supervision of students, Efficiency in healthcare, Communication and Quality of care. Conclusion In this study, the experiences of patients to be part of an IPE unit, were evaluated. In general, patients report positive experiences within the IPE unit. Patients were satisfied with the communication, supervision of students and the time and care that was available. They also thought that the IPE unit contributed to the interprofessional learning trajectory of students.
