Background: Atopic dermatitis is a common skin condition in children, influencing their quality of life. Treatment includes proper skincare and long-term use of emollients and topical steroids. Insufficient and incorrect use is common, indicating the importance of education and guidance. Official recommendations in this area are lacking, and there is uncertainty about the optimal approach and effectiveness of such care. Objective: To analyse the effect of individual education and guidance by an eczema nurse on changes in quality of life in children aged 0 to 16 years with moderate to severe atopic dermatitis after 2-3 months, and to evaluate the quality of provided care. Methods: The study focused on children referred to the Children’s Allergy Treatment Centre at Deventer Hospital. Quality of life was measured using the Infants’ Dermatitis Quality of Life Index (IDQOL) for children under 4 years and the Children’s Dermatology Life Quality Index (CDLQI) for children aged 4 to 16 years. Impact on family life was assessed using the Dermatitis Family Impact Questionnaire (DFIQ) and quality of provided care by using a Patient Reported Experience Measure (PREM). Parents shared their experiences in a focus group. Results: A total of 42 children were included in the study, with three parents participating in the focus group. Statistical analyses showed a significant decrease in IDQOL-, CDLQI- and DFIQ-scores after 2-3 months. Key aspects of eczema care included a clear treatment plan with practical guidelines and easy access to an eczema specialist. Areas for quality improvement included discussing side effects of topical steroids and offering psychosocial support. Conclusion: Individual education and guidance by an eczema nurse significantly reduces the impact of moderate to severe atopic dermatitis on quality of life in children aged 0 to 16 years after 2-3 months. A few points for quality improvement were identified.
