Abstract

Currently, little is known about the factors that influence medical students' clerkship choices. Students experience many stressors when making these decisions, including a lack of academic / career guidance. To offer effective support, it is important to understand the factors on which students base their decisions. This study aimed to identify the choices that medical students at the University of Groningen (RUG) make when choosing their final clerkship and most importantly, the factors underlying these choices. Through quantitative analysis, we examined the final clerkship choices made by medical students over the past four academic years. Subsequently, we conducted a semi-structured interview study with a diverse selection of 16 medical students. The interviews were transcribed and analyzed using inductive thematic analysis. The most chosen specialties were Surgery, Internal Medicine, and Emergency Room. It was found that the choice of the final clerkship is an emotional process, and that 'future career' is not the most important factor for medical students in their choice, but merely one of the important factors that play a role in this decision. The other factors are ‘personal interest’, ‘atmosphere / learning environment’ and ‘M1, M2 and M3 (scientific internship) experiences’. Many participants expressed a need for guidance from the University during their academic / career choices. The findings of this thesis suggest implementing changes, resulting in better support for medical students at the RUG, for example Q&A / information sessions, career consultant and improvement in the manual. This might reduce stressors in the future and help students manage their emotions when making their (clerkship)decisions.
