Abstract

Background and objective: For the environment of individuals with autism and a co-occuring intellectual disability it can be difficult dealing with atypical sensory processing, which can lead to challenging behaviour. Until this moment there was not a place where information about sensory processing could be found all together. Therefore a new platform has been developed for care workers, parents, and teachers on which the bundled knowledge about sensory processing can be found. The platform is set up from three aims: giving (1) general and (2) specific knowledge about sensory processing and (3) giving an overview of different methodologies to cope with sensory processing. This research investigates the usability and functionality of the new platform. These aspects will examine the reliability of the platform. Methods: Eight individuals were included in this study, evenly divided into four participant groups (care workers, parents, teachers, and other experts). The interviews were conducted using userstories, through the Think Aloud method. During the interview the participants used the platform to find answers to questions from the userstories. These userstories were developed using the three project aims of the platform. A qualitative abductive content analysis was performed. Results: All together with regards to the usability and functionality. The participants find the platform is inviting, participants will use the platform and find the texts are understandable and tips are usable. The platform has a nice lay-out, but is missing structure, the platform is partly clear, participants are not distracted, but the icons does not speak for themselves. Most answers to the questions are found on the platform, participants are positive about the way the platform navigates, but answers could not be found fast. Discussion and Conclusion: The participants will re-use the platform and recommend the platform to others. The comments of participants for the usability and functionality of the platform were mostly positive, although a few points of improvement were given. In conclusion, the platform seems reliable, which makes it likely that users will return to the platform.
