Abstract

Introduction: Sexual health is considered a fundamental aspect of general health, and sexual health following gender affirming treatment is an important outcome for many transgender persons. Therefore, insights in results regarding sexual health are mandatory in order to evaluate the current diagnostic- and treatment protocol for transgender adolescents. However, long-term follow-up studies on sexual health of transgender persons have not been conducted yet. Aim: To gain insight in the first long-term results on sexual health of transgender persons that received medical gender affirming treatment in their adolescence. Method: A total of 14 transgender persons who underwent gender affirming hormonal therapy during adolescence, followed by gender affirming surgery, filled out a self-report questionnaire in order to investigate sexual health. The questionnaire consisted of both self-composed items and items from existing validated and unvalidated questionnaires. Main measurements: Gender identity, sexual orientation, sexual experience, sexual activity, satisfaction with sex life, sexual problems, and body image. Results: This study gave some insights in the sexual health of a group of transgender persons with a mean age of 41.6 years, and an average of 20.6 years after gender affirming surgery. This study has shown that the majority of the participants (57.1%) never experienced any sexual problem that was related to them being a transgender. Moreover, almost half of the participants (42.9%) is satisfied with their overall sex life, which is in line with the satisfaction rate in the general population. Discussion: Where this study managed to give some first insights in the sexual health of transgender persons who underwent medical gender affirming treatment in their adolescence, a study with a larger sample size is needed in order to draw formal conclusions on the population. Moreover, the role of several baseline characteristics should be investigated in further research.
