Abstract

BACKGROUND – Patient preferences are found to be absent during the majority of oncological multidisciplinary team meetings (MDMTs). The absence of patient preferences and patient specific information (such as social status, physical- and mental health situation) is associated with patients’ non-compliance with treatment advice. The Werkgroep Neuro-Oncologie Volwassenen (WNOV) is a neuro-oncological MDMT in the UMCG. The aim of this explorative study was to objectify the presence and role of patient preference and patient specific information during MDMTs of the WNOV. Also, we wanted to identify a possible association between the absence of such information and patients’ non-compliance with treatments advised by the WNOV. METHODS – A retrospective database study was performed. The presence of both biomedical and patient specific information, advised treatments and treatment-compliance was scored from 497 WNOV-MDMT reports. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and regression analysis. Subsequently, we observed 137 case discussions from 7 WNOV-MDMTs. Once again the presence of both biomedical and patient specific information was scored, using an observational tool. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and chi-square. RESULTS –Both retrospective and observational data show very limited availability of patient specific information and patient preferences during WNOV-MDMTs (respectively present in 20.2%-16.5% and .9%-21.9% of case discussions). Non-compliance of patients with treatments advised by the WNOV occurred in 10.7% of cases. Logistic regression showed no significant association between the absence of patient specific information during the MDMT and patients’ non-compliance with given treatment advise. Presence of the patient’s treating physician during the MDMT was significantly related with the availability of information on social status (p=0.026). CONCLUSION– Patient preferences and patient specific information were absent in the majority of the WNOV’s multidisciplinary team meetings. However, we did not find a significant association between the absence of such information and patients’ non-compliance with treatments advised by the WNOV.
