Abstract

Background Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a condition affecting people globally. Much research is done to obtain information concerning risk factors and treatment. One of these risk factors is the use of assisted reproductive technology (ART). ART and ASD have many common risk factors, which makes it difficult to distinguish between the influence of common risk factors on ASD or the actual use of ART. Research question Is there a difference between prevalence of ART use among parents of children with ASD compared to the prevalence of ART in the general Dutch population? Materials and method In the present study, the prevalence ratio of the use of ART and common risk factors for ART were examined in a study population consisting of children with an ASD diagnosis (two to eighteen years old) and a large sample of the average Dutch population. The study population consisted of 4959 children and the average Dutch population study group around 170.000 children Results and conclusion The primary analysis showed an increased prevalence of ART use in the ASD population, specifically VF/ICSI. However, the common risk factors for ASD had a significant relation with ART as well and the cumulative existence of one or more risk factors had a significant relation with ART use. The results showed that the existence of other mental conditions did not greatly influence the prevalence of ART use in the ASD population. In conclusion,,the increased prevalence of ART among the ASD population was partially explained by the common risk factors and therefore a relation between ASD and ART cannot be proved neither rejected.
