Abstract

Introduction: In the University Medical Centre Groningen, it is possible to use a hospice care unit to create a hospice-like atmosphere for patients in the dying phase and their relatives. Using both quantitative and qualitative research, we evaluated the experiences of nurses and relatives with healthcare in the dying phase and the hospice care unit. Methods: Quantitative research was performed by analysing surveys completed by relatives who lost a loved one in the UMCG. An intervention group of relatives who had experience with the hospice care unit was compared to a control group of relatives without experience with the hospice care unit. Outcome measures included quality of dying on a Numeric Rating Scale (NRS). Qualitative research consisted of semi-structured interviews with relatives and nurses about their experiences with the hospice care unit. Results: In the intervention group (n=26), the median on the NRS for quality of dying was 8 (IQR 5.75 - 8.25), and in the control group (n=26) the median was 6 (IQR 3.25 - 8.00) (p = 0.056) Qualitative research showed that both relatives and nurses are very positive about healthcare in the dying phase and the use of the hospice care unit. Conclusion: Relatives and nurses are very positive about the effect of the hospice care unit on their experiences in the last days of their loved ones’ and the care provided by nurses in the dying phase. This research gives reason for further development and expansion of the hospice care unit.
