Background: Previous research showed that preterm neonates are exposed to a huge amount of stress during their stay on the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Not only for the neonates, but also for their parents this hospital period is a stressful time. The stress during this hospital stay can influence the mental state of the parents, the developing parent-child relationship and the parenting role. Aim: To investigate the relation between mothers stress and her preterm neonates. Methods: We included 12 Neonates born before 30 weeks’ gestation. Neonatal stress was determined in two ways. During every shift, nurses filled in a stress score for the neonates according to a 10-point Likert scale. The Neonatal Infant Stressor Scale (NISS) was determined daily from information on morbidity and procedures noted in the medical records. Stress of the mothers was determined using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) list, which they filled in during the first weeks of admission of their infants. Pearson correlation coefficients were calculated to determine the relation between the NISS scores of the neonate and the STAI scores of their mother, and linear regression analysis was used to analyze the effect of the NISS score on the STAI score. Results: In comparison with the average total STAI score from the reference group, 11 out of 12 mothers scored a higher STAI total score. The STAI score correlated strongly with the objective NISS score (Pearson’s r=0.764,p=0.004). The NISS score explained 58.2% of the variance of the STAI score of the mother. Conclusion: The objective NISS score explained the stress score of the mother for more than 50 percent. All mothers experienced a high level of stress during the stay of their neonates on the NICU, regardless of the gestational age. Because of this, physicians should pay attention to the stress of the mother and their coping strategies. We recommend physicians
