Abstract

Introduction: Current study investigated the association between regional exposure of the COVID-19 virus and the mental health of healthcare workers. The study also investigated whether the impact of COVID-19 differs between healthcare workers with (subjective) direct or indirect contact with COVID-19 in the working environment. Methods: From 12 May to 17 July 2020, Dutch healthcare workers (both clinical and supporting staff) with (possible) interaction with COVID-19 were approached for participation at various health services (hospital, nursing home, mental health care). A total of 488 healthcare workers fully completed the questionnaire online consisting of; socio-demographic questions, concerns about COVID-19, subjective exposure COVID-19 and 2 instruments to measure mental health (GHQ-12 and PHQ-9). For regional exposure, provinces have been divided into 4 exposure groups based on the number of COVID-19 hospitalizations per 100,000 inhabitants. Linear regression analysis was performed to determine whether regional exposure and subjective contact with COVID-19 in the workplace are predictors of mental health (GHQ-12 and the PHQ-9). Results: Included healthcare workers were mainly female (79.5%) and nurses (30.1%) or doctors (25.6%) by profession. 28% of the participants scored above the cut-off value of the PHQ-9, which indicates an increase of depressive symptoms. Healthcare workers who had direct contact with COVID-19 at the workplace scored higher on the PHQ-9, not on the GHQ- 12, compared to healthcare workers without direct COVID-19 contact. No association was found between regional exposure and the GHQ and PHQ score. Conclusion: The findings support the assumption that subjective direct exposure to COVID- 19 at the workplace leads to increased concerns about contamination, which can lead to a negative impact on mental health, specifically depressive symptoms. Regional COVID-19 exposure was not associated with mental health.
