Abstract

Background: Asthma is the most prevalent chronic disease among Dutch youth. Previous studies show that asthma during adolescence is associated with different psychiatric comorbidities and that the prevalence of depression and anxiety is higher in adolescents with asthma compared to non-asthmatic pears. Aim: To determine the association between having asthma and experiencing anxiety and depressive symptoms in Dutch adolescents. Methods: Cross-sectional study involving asthmatic adolescents within the ages of 11-17 years from a hospital-based cohort and a community-based cohort. The level of experiencing anxiety and depression symptoms in adolescents with asthma was compared to a non-asthmatic group from the WHISTLER birth cohort by means of the Revised Child Anxiety and Depression scale (RCADS) questionnaire. Higher RCADS scores suggest higher prevalence of anxiety and depressive symptoms. Results: The cohort consisted of 247 adolescents of whom 12,6% was asthmatic. Nineteen asthmatic adolescents came from secondary care and twelve from a community-based population. There was no significant difference between the asthmatic and the non-asthmatic adolescents in standardized RCADS T-scores on different subscales and total score. However when performing stratified analysis, asthmatic adolescents from the community-based cohort scored on average higher on RCADS T-scores compared to non-asthmatic pears, although not statistically significant. Asthmatic adolescents from the hospital-based cohort scored on average lower on RCADS T-scores compared to non-asthmatic pears, not statistically significant either. Conclusion: There seems no significant association between asthma and experiencing depressive and anxiety symptoms in Dutch adolescents.
