Abstract

Knowledge progression during radiology residency is tested by means of the bi-annual Dutch Radiology Progress Test (DRPT) in the Netherlands. Currently, there is a lack of literature regarding the relationship between the residents’ test scores and their productivity in daily radiological practice during residency. This study was carried out to determine the association between DRPT scores and productivity among radiology residents. The findings that were presented in this study were based on the data that were collected from 51 residents who were enrolled in the radiology residency program of the University Medical Center Groningen between Year 1 and year 4. Spearman correlation and linear regression analyses were performed to investigate the association between DRPT score and productivity. Progress test and productivity scores across the different residency years had a moderately positive and statistically significant correlation (rs(88) = .415, p < .0005). Progress score significantly predicted the production score with one unit increase in progress score resulting in an increase of 2.981 units in production score when the resident years are held constant (p = 0.005). The number of hours working in breast imaging and nuclear medicine significantly predicted resident’s productivity. In conclusion, knowledge, as measured by the DRPT, seems to increase productivity. Productivity, on the other hand, may also increase knowledge because a higher daily case load may increase exposure of a resident to instructive clinical problems, anatomy, and pathology. Since knowledge and productivity are important competencies of a radiologist, and apparently intertwined, the DRPT and productivity scores can be considered valuable metrics to program directors and residents to measure progress during residency.
