Abstract

Diet may play a role in testicular function based on studies in infertile males. However, data whether dietary intake is associated with semen quality in men from a general population is scarce. We aimed to relate dietary patterns in a general Dutch male population to their semen quality. This is a retrospective analysis of 134 men participating in the VESPER-LL study. Dietary patterns were identified using a validated food frequency questionnaire and principal component analysis. Semen parameters were analyzed according to the WHO 2010 guidelines. We used linear regression to examine associations between dietary patterns and sperm parameters and logistic regression to assess the likelihood of abnormal semen parameters. Western, traditional Dutch, and health-conscious dietary patterns were identified. No association was found between these dietary patterns and semen parameters. Men in the second quartile of the health-conscious dietary pattern were significantly less likely to have abnormal progressive motility, compared to men in the first quartile (odds ratio 0.15 [95%CI 0.03-0.77], after adjusting 0.12 [95%CI 0.02-0.66]). The likelihood of having abnormal progressive motility was higher in the fourth quartile of the traditional Dutch pattern, compared to the first quartile (odds ratio 4.75 [95%CI 1.02-22.1], not significant after adjusting). We concluded that health-conscious and traditional Dutch diets might be associated with the risk to have abnormal progressive motility. Due to the limitations of the design and some inconsistencies in the results, this needs to be interpreted cautiously.
