Abstract

Objective The aim of this study is to determine from what point in time after dehydration of upper incisors a colour change has occurred that is visible to the naked eye, and how much time these teeth need to fully rehydrate again. The importance of the outcome is to know how long a dentist or dental technician has to perform a colour measurement for a reliable colour determination. And also to know how long after treatment the final result can be assessed. The study population contained 50 dentistry and dental hygienist students with at least one sound upper incisor. The dehydration took place using lip retractors. Photographs were taken at various intervals between 0 s and 15 min with a grey card directly below the central upper incisors. After 15 minutes, the lip retractors were removed and 4 more photos were taken every 15 minutes for rehydration. With the help of various software, the colour of the central upper incisors on each photo was determined and the ∆E value relative to time point 0. Results It has been shown that a visible colour difference actually occurs during the time with dehydration of teeth, to know after 2 minutes. A significant difference (p <0.05) has been found between men and women, with men achieving visible colour difference earlier than women. After 60 minutes of rehydration, 38% of the study group still shows visible colour difference. No significant difference has been found for the factors smoking, bleaching, medication, age and mouth breathing. Conclusion Visible colour difference (∆E> 0.8) occurs after 2 minutes of dehydration. After 60 minutes of rehydration, a visible colour difference is still present in 38% of the study group.
