Nothing is known in the literature about patients' expectations regarding wisdom tooth removal. Also, there is no consensus within scientific literature on whether these expectations are real and correspond to reality. This study investigates what the expectations are of patients in Scheper Ziekenhuis - Treant Zorggroep with regard to third molar extractions and whether these expectations correspond to the actual perception. Furthermore, the way information is provided to patients about third molar extractions prior to treatment could also influence patients' expectations. Again, nothing is known about this in the literature. Clinical experience shows that medical specialists in the field of Oral, Maxillofacial and Facial Surgery have little insight of patients' expectations of this surgical procedure. More information about this could help physicians to better inform and guide patients about this treatment. This study tries to find the answer to the question: what are the expectations of patients regarding third molar extractions and do these expectations correspond to the actual perception. Furthermore, the effect of the way information is provided to the patients prior to treatment on the patients' expectations during third molar extractions is investigated. Hereby, it was investigated whether or not the patients were informed in advance by the dentist or other practitioner about the treatment and the effect of this on the expectations. In this study, patients' expectations such as expectations of pain during and after treatment, course of postoperative symptoms and social functioning after treatment were recorded before treatment using a questionnaire. After the procedure, the questionnaire was again completed by the patients in two parts to record the actual experiences. The 11-point scale (0-10) 'Numeric rating scale' (NRS) was used as the measurement tool for each question. The questionnaire was designed so that the more negative the expectation patient the higher the score. The preoperative scores were compared with the postoperative scores. Using the Wilcoxon rank sum test and the paired t-test, we calculated whether a significant difference exists between the pre and postoperative scores and linked to this the preoperative expectations and the postoperative experiences. This was performed for both the total scores of the questionnaire and the for individual scores of each question in the questionnaire separately. The results obtained show that the preoperative scores are generally significantly higher than the postoperative scores. This is true for the total scores and for majority of the scores per question. Thus, patients have more negative expectations regarding extractions of third molars and their experiences about this treatment are more positive afterwards. Based on the results from this study, medical specialists in the field of Oral, Maxillofacial Surgery can better help, inform and guide the patients about wisdom teeth removal. As a result, patients will have a more realistic and less negative view of this treatment. Because the population studied is comparable to populations elsewhere in The Netherlands, which also guarantees external validity, the results obtained in this study would also apply to populations elsewhere in the Netherlands. Furthermore, the analysis of the results in this study using the Mann-Whitney test shows that it does not matter whether or not the patients were informed in advance by the practitioner about the treatment. The expectations here are not significantly different and informing the patient in advance by the practitioner has no effect on the expectations of patients in third molar removal.
