Abstract

Background: To measure up to the increasing complex care demand, it is important for oral care professionals to collaborate interprofessionally. Commitment is a precondition for the formation of a social (interprofessional) identity. Identity is expressed in behavior, such as interprofessional collaboration. The degree of interprofessional identity, and thus the degree of interprofessional collaboration, may be influenced by the transformational leadership style of the dentist-manager. This has not been researched before. The research question is: ‘To what extent does transformational leadership influence interprofessional identity and interprofessional collaboration among dentists and dental hygienists within a team practice?’ Purpose: The objective of this study is to optimize the education of the studies dentistry and dental hygiene in the Netherlands. Methods: To research the relationships between the variables, a questionnaire is completed. The questionnaire was completed by 53 dentists and dental hygienists working in team practices led by a dentist-manager. Transformational leadership is measured on the Global Transformational Leadership Scale (GTL) and interprofessional identification is mapped using the Extended Professional Identity Scale (EPIS). Collaboration preference is measured using a list of professions. Based on this list the respondents should indicate how important they think the collaboration is and to what extent they collaborate with this profession. All variables are measured on a five-point Likert scale. The hypothesized model was tested using Kendall’s τ correlation, linear regression analysis, t-tests, chi-square tests, Mann-Whitney U tests, Wilcoxon’s signed-rank tests and exploratory factor analysis. Results: Between supportive leadership and interprofessional beliefs a association is found. Transformational leadership, interprofessional identity and interprofessional collaboration preference are seemingly not associated. The size of the interprofessional identity determines the importance of the collaboration to a large extent. Conclusion: In this research, transformational leadership appears to merely play a limited role on the degree of interprofessional identity and on the (interprofessional) collaboration preference. However, an indication is found that a relationship exists between supportive leadership and interprofessional beliefs. In future research the relationship between transformational leadership and interprofessional identity should be further researched with a larger group of respondents. Only then it is possible to draw further conclusions.
