Abstract

Collisions between football players can cause dental trauma. Dutch professional football club have their own medical staff, including a team physician. Question is whether the team physician has the skill and knowledge to act properly in case of a dental trauma occurrence. The research question in this study is: what is the knowledge level team physicians pertaining to dental trauma and which factors influence this? By gaining insight in which factors are of influence one can determine how the knowledge level can be increased. An online questionnaire was answered by team physicians that are employed by professional football clubs in the Netherlands. The questionnaire is composed of 25 questions to ascertain knowledge level, experience and education in regard to dental trauma and knowledge about the dental Trauma guide and guidelines of the KNMT. 10 multiple choice questions asses the knowledge level of the team physician. The results showed that 19 out 25 team physicians answered at least 6 out of 10 questions correctly. This was deemed acceptable. Results show that most of the team physicians were not familiar with the ‘Dental Trauma Guide’ and the guidelines of the KNMT, but the majority of the group indicated they thought that they were capable of acting in case dental trauma would occur. The questionnaire did not pertain to procedures followed in case of dental trauma and therefore it is not known if they are known. As result of this study it is recommended to emphasize the guidelines of the KNMT about dental trauma to the team physicians, and more research is necessary to conclude if team physicians act as prescripted by the guidelines. Concluding: statistical analysis showed no significant relationship between knowledge level and other variables, because the statistical data base was not large enough and not enough data was available.
