The aim of this study is to determine the influence of the implementation of the Dutch guideline, i.e. ‘Richtlijn mondzorg voor zorgafhankelijke cliënten in verpleeghuizen’, on the overall oral health of frail older people living in a local nursing home after one year follow-up. Furthermore, this study investigated how the implementation is associated with the overall oral health, and if individual factors are predictors for the degree of change in overall oral health. A retrospective cohort study was conducted. 40 subjects were included, who were 65 years or older, living in a local nursing home, followed for a year, and had a Package of Care Dependency (ZZP). Subjects were admitted from 2017 up until 2019, and followed for a year. Upon admission they were screened by an oral health care professional using the Dutch Oral Health Assessment Tool (OHAT-NL), a validated assessment tool. This procedure was repeated at one year follow-up. Using a one-sample t-test and linear regression results were analysed. In retrospect, the change in overall oral health (ΔOOH) was not statistically significant with the implementation of the Dutch guideline (p > ,05). Statistically age, gender, oral status, and ZZP were not significant predictors of ΔOOH (p > ,05). In conclusion, implementation of the Dutch guideline provides a stable situation of the overall oral health for frail older people living in a nursing home. A national implementation with process evaluation, and prolonged follow-up period is needed to gain more insight on the reach of the implementation of the Dutch guideline.
