Abstract

Osgood-Schlatter is a frequently diagnosed injury in children between the age of 8 and 15 years old, which is mainly related to the growth spurt and overuse. Symptoms are often long-lasting and an effective treatment is currently missing, underlining the importance of preventive measures. In order to develop these preventive measures, knowledge about incidence and prevalence, as well as knowledge about risk factors associated with the injury is necessary. Because information about incidence and prevalence of Osgood-Schlatter in youth players in the Netherlands is lacking, the primary aim of this study was to determine these figures. Identifying possible risk factors associated with the injury was the secondary aim. In this cross-sectional study, non-elite soccer players in the surroundings of Groningen between the age of 8 and 15 years were invited to complete a questionnaire with regard to Osgood-Schlatter. A total of 279 children were included in the analysis and 39 children met the criteria for Osgood-Schlatter (14,1%). This led to a prevalence rate of 141,3 per 1000 children. Due to the fact that many children did not want to participate in any further research, a follow-up in which new cases were to be identified was not conducted. Therefore, no incidence rates could be established. With an average VISA-O score of 69 points, the injury seems to have considerable impact on the ability to participate in sport related activities. The multiple logistic regression analysis showed that the risk of having Osgood-Schlatter increased with age. Children practicing an additional sport besides soccer had an increased risk of having Osgood-Schlatter. However, no associations were found between hours of sport participation and the presence of Osgood-Schlatter. Further research focusing on the incidence of Osgood-Schlatter as well as modifiable risk factors associated with the injury is necessary in order to develop effective preventive measures.
