Abstract

It is essential that dentists know the mechanism of action, the risks, the interactions with co-medication and the side effects of the medication they are prescribing. Since dentists mainly prescribe antibiotics and analgesics, this study will focus on these drug groups. The question that follows is: To what extent is there a difference in knowledge and application of this knowledge of medication safety between recently graduated dentists and experienced dentists with regard to the prescription of analgesics and antibiotics? Based on an online questionnaire, consisting of 10 questions about antibiotics and 10 questions about analgesics, the participants' knowledge was tested. The aim of the study is to map out whether knowledge is lacking among these (specialized) dentists and where this knowledge is lacking. There were 141 participants included in this study. The 141 dentists included 45 inexperienced and 96 experienced dentists, of which 54 in Groningen, 14 in Nijmegen, 3 in Utrecht, 51 in Amsterdam and 20 graduated abroad. A total of 121 participants graduated in the Netherlands and 20 abroad. Of the 141 participants, 24 dentists were specialized or differentiated. A total of 62 (44%) participants scored a pass (more than 60%) on both questionnaires together. However, only 46 (33%) of the total participants score a pass on both components separately. The experienced dentists scored better than the inexperienced dentists, the dentists graduated from abroad scored better than the dentists graduated in the Netherlands and the specialized or differentiated dentists scored better than the general practicing dentists. However, these differences were not found to be significant. Significantly better scores were achieved on the questions about NSAIDs than about antibiotics. The results of this study suggest that dentists working in the Netherlands have an insufficient level of knowledge about medication that they prescribe themselves. All groups have an average score of unsatisfactory, only the group that includes specialized and differentiated dentists score an average of poor pass. However, this difference is not significant compared to the score of the generally practicing dentist. The results of this research show that improving pharmacotherapy knowledge and skills among dentists requires much more attention.
