Abstract

Introduction: The injection of botulinum toxin A (BoNT-A) in the head and neck area is becoming increasingly popular for both esthetic and functional indications. However, it is currently not unequivocally described for dentists in the Netherlands which types of treatment they are allowed to perform. Recently, the discussion between several associations representing both physicians and dentists has been intensified. To gain insight into possible future discussions between, and motivation among dentists and physicians, the current survey was conducted among medical and dentistry students. The main research question was: 'What is the attitude of dentistry versus medical students about botulinum toxin A treatments in the head and neck area performed by doctors and dentists?' Material and method: The described study is a comparative study using an online questionnaire. The data was collected anonymously via the protected program REDcap and analyzed with various (non-)parametric tests in SPSS. A total of 411 completed questionnaires was included, of which 262 were from medical students and 149 from dentistry students. The results can be seen as representative for the entire Dutch student population. Results: The general interest in BoNT-A in combination with the motivation for administering of BoNT-A in the head and neck area in the future, as well as the objective knowledge about BoNT-A was slightly higher among dental students compared to medical students. Both dentistry and medical students shared the opinion that doctors and dentists are both qualified for administering BoNT-A injections in the head and neck area. However, both groups of students qualified doctors as somewhat more suitable than dentists. Students rank their own profession higher than the students of the other study do. Both groups of students share the opinion that the treatment room in a dental practice is appropriate for BoNT-A injections, although dental students scored somewhat higher on this item. Discussion and conclusion: Both groups of students showed a positive attitude towards BoNT-A treatments in the head and neck area performed by dentists. Future discussions can therefore be expected to be less conflicting. The results of the thesis argue in favor of a legal description of the qualification and competence of dentists regarding BoNT-A treatments in the head and neck area in the ‘Wet BIG’ (book of law regarding occupations in individual health care). Not only because of their knowledge of the anatomy and pathology in this area, but now also because of the positive attitude of both groups of future physicians.
