Abstract

Nowadays implants are frequently placed for an overdenture in both the edentulous maxilla and the edentulous mandible. Many studies show a high success as well as a high survival rate of implants that support overdentures. In this study, the success and survival of implants in the edentulous mandible, which are placed simultaneously with implants in the edentulous maxilla as support for an overdenture, were studied for an observation period of 5 years. In addition, the mean peri implant radiographic bone resorption that occurred after 5 years was also examined. Also, research has been carried out to determine the influence of gender, age, and implant system on the success and survival of the implants and the average peri implant radiographic bone resorption. After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 67 patients were included in this study. These patients were implanted in the edentulous maxilla with four or six implants and in the edentulous mandible with four implants for the purpose of an implant supported overdenture. Data was collected based on existing panoramic radiographs and the information from the electronic patient file. After an observation period of 5 years the survival and success rate was 100% and 92,5%, respectively. The mean peri implant bone measured on x-ray pictures was 0,52 ± 0,28 mm. The differences in success and survival with respect to gender, age, and implant system were insignificant. The differences in mean peri implant radiographic bone resorption between gender and age categories were also insignificant. However, a significant difference was shown in the mean peri implant radiographic bone resorption between the implant systems. This study has shown that implants in the edentulous mandible, which are placed simultaneously with implants in the edentulous maxilla, have shown similar results as implants in the edentulous maxilla for the purpose of overdentures. The success and survival rates of the implants are both high. The mean bone resorption around the implants that has occurred after 5 years is considered normal. However, a follow-up study with a larger population over a longer follow-up period is recommended to demonstrate potential significant differences in success and survival and the extent of bone resorption between gender, age, and implant system.
