Abstract

As prosperity increases, consumption patterns of food have changed in recent decades. The range of foods has changed and people not only eat more but also more often. For this reason, the prevalence of dental caries and erosion remains high. This research project was implemented to gain insight into the drinking behavior of children around the age of five and how far the behavior of the parent influences the drinking behavior of the child. The main question in this study is: ‘Which factors influence the drinking behavior of children in grades 1 and 2 of primary school?’. Based on the acquired information on consumption patterns advice is given about the need to drink water. This is a cross-sectional questionnaire-based patient-related study in the city of Groningen. The dependent variable is drinking behavior of the child. There were 318 subjects required for a 95% confidence interval and a 5% margin of error. The anonymized questionnaires were processed in RedCap. The logistic regression was used for the statistical analysis. In the end 156 subjects were included in the study. Twenty-three subjects have a low SES (14,7%) and 125 subjects have a high SES (80,1%). One hundred and sixteen subjects (74,4%) are native and thirtythree subjects (21,2%) are immigrants. In total, there were 68 boys (43,6%), 79 girls (50,6%) and the gender of nine subjects is unknown (5,8%). On a daily basis, children mainly drink water (87.2%), milk or buttermilk (63.5%) and syrup or lemonade (32.7%). Parents mainly drink water (78.8%), coffee or tea without sugar (72.4%) and milk or buttermilk (27.6%). 47.4% of the children (n = 74) and 69.2% of the parents (n = 108) have healthy drinking behavior. A positive significant relationship existed between healthy drinking behavior of the child and ethnicity (p = 0,004, OR = 3,5 and confidence interval 1,5-8,3) and between component A (drinking outside of meals) (p = 0,004, OR = 3,067 and confidence interval 1,4-6,6) and healthy drinking behavior of the parent (p = 0,023, OR = 2,5 and confidence interval 1,1-5,5). The variables SES (high SES) and component T (never take a drink to bed) show a trend. The current study shows that the variables ethnicity, component A and the drinking behavior of the parent influence the drinking behavior of the child. Since there is a significant relationship between healthy drinking behavior of the child and healthy drinking behavior of the parent, the dentist is able to respond to this by informing the parent about the importance of drinking water. In addition, advice can be given about the number of drinking moments outside of meals and giving the child something to drink during the night. Due to the small unrepresentative study population, the test results cannot be translated to all children in grades 1 and 2 of primary school in the Netherlands. More research is needed regarding the different factors that influence children's drinking behavior.
