Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different surface conditioning methods on the repair bond strength between aged composite and fresh composite. Material and methods: In this in vitro study 40 composite blocks were prepared. The blocks were thermocyclic aged (x20.000, 5-55°C, 30s). After the aging procedure, the blocks were randomly assigned to one of the following surface conditioning methods: (1) Aquacare 29 µm Al2O3 + silane + adhesive, (2) Aquacare 29 µm Al2O3 + Aquasol + silane + adhesive, (3) Aquacare 30 µm CoSiLab + silane + adhesive, (4) Aquacare 30 µm CoSiLab + Aquasol + silane + adhesive, (5) Cojet 30 µm SiOx + silane + adhesive. The fresh composite was bonded to the conditioned substrates. Each block was sectioned into five specimens with a diamond saw. The dimension of each specimen was appoximately 1 mm x 1mm x 10 mm with a bonding area of 1 mm2. Once again, the specimens were thermocycled (x20.000, 5-55°C, 30s). The specimens were subjected to a microtensile bond strength test (crosshead speed: 1mm/min). Bond strength data were analysed using an one-way ANOVA. A Chi-Square test was used to investigate differences in mode of failure between the experimental groups. A one-way ANOVA and Fisher’s exact test was used to determine the independence of the specimens. Results: The means and standard deviations of bond strength (MPa) per group were as follows: (4) 19,02 5,74, (5) 17,91 8,11, (3) 16,44 8,11, (2) 15,44 6,34, (1) 14,71 7,53. There were no significant differences between the mean bond strengths of the surface conditioning methods (p > 0,05), the type of failure (p > 0,05), the mean bond strengths of the specimen between the composite blocks (p > 0,05) and the type of failure of the specimen between the composite blocks (p > 0,05). Conclusions: No differences in mean bond strength were observed. The results of this study show that the different surface conditioning methods are able to create a durable bond between new and aged composite.
