Background: Globally, the number of older people is rapidly increasing. This group consists more and more of frail elderly. Due to greatly improved oral care and awareness of the importance of good oral health, more (frail) elderly people will still have their natural dentition until high age. Because elderly retain their dentition until they are old, they require dental care for basically their entire life. Dental care for frail elderly is often complex due to health-related issues and complex dental situations after years of restorative treatments. It seems that contemporary dentists feel that they are insufficiently trained to treat these frail older people. The main aim of the study was to determine whether the elderly population in educational setting (i.e., the Center for Dentistry and Oral Hygiene) is comparable to the population in the general practice. The goal was to determine whether students in the educational setting of the University of Groningen are sufficiently trained in the general dental practice. Method: In this study patients aged ≥75 years visiting the general practice and CTM were asked to complete questionnaires Frailty was measured with the Groningen Frailty Indicator (GFI). The questionnaire contained the following topics: educational attainment, description of dentition, oral care and factors that hinder / facilitate visiting the dental practice. Results: A total of 99 patients from general practices and 117 patients from the CTM participated. The majority of these patients were not frail, 70 (71%) in general practices and 78 (67%) in the CTM. No differences were found in terms of frailty between the two groups. Most CTM patients had a low educational level and they were more often edentulous patients at the general practice. Costs were seen as a barrier for patients to visit CTM. Conclusion: The aim of this study was to determine whether the elderly populations visiting the CTM or general practice were comparable. The treatment population of the CTM is comparable to the treatment population of the dental practices, although the study group consisted mainly of non-frail elderly. In order to prepare students for their work in general practice frail older people should participate as patients in the dental clinic of the University. However, it must be concluded that the number of frail elderly visiting the CTM dental clinic is relatively low and too low to be able to provide sufficient training options. It is advised to attract more frail elderly as patients in the patient population of CTM.
